How to Choose a Water Damage Restoration Contractor
Choosing a water damage restoration contractor in Southern California means filtering through dozens of options under pressure, often within hours of the event. A few markers separate competent operators from the rest.
Verify IICRC certification
Ask if technicians are IICRC certified. The credential numbers verify at the IICRC website. WRT (Water Damage Restoration Technician), ASD (Applied Structural Drying), and AMRT (Applied Microbial Remediation Technician) are the relevant designations.
California license requirements
Water damage mitigation doesn't require a specific California Contractors State License Board (CSLB) license. However, any work involving structural changes (drywall replacement, framing work) does require a B or C-35 license. Many restoration companies maintain B licenses; many operate strictly within mitigation scope and refer rebuild work out.
Insurance and bonding
General liability minimum $1 million. Workers' compensation if they have employees. Many restoration companies post their insurance certificates online. Ask for current certificates before any work starts.
Direct insurance billing
The best California restoration companies bill the insurance carrier directly. You pay only your deductible. SoCal Dry Pro and similar dispatch services include this as standard. Be cautious of any contractor who demands the full payment upfront — that's a red flag for either a small operator without insurance billing relationships or a scam.
Reasonable response time
Reputable restoration companies in the LA / OC market respond within 60 to 90 minutes. After-hours and weekend response are standard for water emergencies. A company that can't dispatch quickly probably doesn't have the equipment fleet or crew depth to actually restore your home efficiently.
